don't you see how weak I get

Yesterday my Rookie Yearbook 2 arrived and I read it today while listening to Spilling Lines by Poliça and I felt really, truly at peace with everything

I'm starting to realize
a) how to genuinely just not care what people think of me or of anything (not in an apathetic way, more in a filtering out negative energy way) and it's actually getting really easy.

b) how to walk through the halls and be content with what I have with less anxiety about what I don't have (grades, friends)

c) how to live in the moment (ew ew I sound like a high school guidance counselor and I'm very sorry) but I'm understanding how to accept imperfection (actually I really want to work on this post for about an hour more to really get my point across but I'm just going to leave it like this because I'm only as perfect as I am)

d) the human race is actually pretty amazing I mean obviously we're not perfect but we're creating amazing things and we're living people and saving people and a thousand things are happening at once and "that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse

e) listening to Flawless while cleaning the garbage out of your locker/walking through the halls is incredibly life-affirming. It makes you feel incredible- nay! It makes you feel flawless. That is probably the only time I will ever allow myself to make a Beyonce pun (and also Blogger is now trying to tell me that Beyonce isn't a word and I can't find the accent mark for the "e" as my faith in the internet slowly declines. ugh.)

f) happiness?¿ I'm sure I haven't reached an apex of enlightenment yet, but I know that I feel happier and calmer now than I have in months.

*cue smiley face emoticons*

I'm happy that my outfit ended up looking purposeful even though I put no effort. At first it was a cross country uniform but hen I wanted to wear the bracelet and the skirt, because they seemed like they were both in the same category in terms of "Yes, I'm cool, no, don't talk to me" vibes. I changed the laces of my boots to my sneaker laces to add to the ~sporty spice~ element of the sweater. In retrospect I attribute this outfit to listening to Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac and Wannabe by the Spice girls alternatingly.

hi there 2014

I don't know about you, but 2014 snuck up on me like a vampire in orthopedic shoes, and you know what- I survived, we survived. The world didn't end and that's pretty wonderful.

For some reason, it doesn't really FEEL like New Year's Eve this year, and it certainly doesn't feel like a whole year has passed since I was some akward 11 year old who didn't really know anything about anything (not gonna pretend that I know that much now anyways.)

I just realized that some parts of the world are already in 2014 and now I feel like I'm in an old scifi movie because I have extremely high expectations for our ability to have hovercrafts and teleportation and robot butlers in 2014.

2013 was a really rad year for me for so many reasons
1. I started this blog, and I didn't quit *hooray*.
2. I somehow magically discovered this super cool community of people with blogs, and zines, and all these amazing interests and it's been incredibly fun! (hopefully that didn't sound too cringy)
3. Um... you guys. You're all very cool (obviously, because you're reading my blog) and I just want to thank you for putting up with me for so long and reading these posts because it's just an incredible feeling to know somewhere in the world, 20 something people are reading what you're writing.
4. I learned so much about feminism and music and movies and I'm so happy to be 5000% better/cooler than I was last December.

But, 2014 is going to be even radder because I will,
1. Start blogging regularly: at least twice a week. I know, it's exciting for both of us.
2. Managing my time a lot better than I did this year
3. Focus on basically, radiating happiness (kindness, compassion etc) into myself and the universe
4. Create things as much as possible: write more, maybe try singing, draw, paint etc
5. Read more, specifically read better books.
6. Get a job or figure out some magical way for a 12 year old to make money: seriously, I need to be able to afford something from the Meadham Kirchoff collection that isn't a pair of socks.
7. Stop procrastinating on schoolwork
8. Stop procrastinating on blogging
9. Stop procrastinating
10. Keep a journal more often
10. World domination from the comfort of my computer chair
11. Beyonce (yes that is a resolution)
12. ??????????? (who knows? the future is a mystery?) (I'm proud of how simultaneously mysterious and motivational speaker-y that was)
13. Sign as many change.org petitions as possible
14. Exist

I tried to write this, but I couldn't do it as well as Dini who said, "It {the future, resolutions etc} makes me feel like diving deeper into the ocean without knowing what kind of monster we have to face."

That quote, and this quote from a very inspiring visionary,
"Yesterday is history, tomorrow's a mystery" - Justin Timberlake

I also made a New Year's playlist for dancing alone in your room when the clock strikes 12.

Get This Party Started
Shake It Out
Tell Me Something Good
All Night
I'll Be Yours
Conga
One Way or Another
Crocodile Rock
Be A Body
Rill Rill
Come on Eileen

RIP 2013, it was nice knowing you. See you all in the future.

ETA: It is now officially 2014, and I'm not in a hovercraft. All hope is lost. Oh well, maybe 2015

aidan backwards is nadia and I think that's pretty amazing.

Confession time: I haven't been on the Vogue or Style or any magazine website in 2 months. To most people, I guess this wouldn't be such a big deal. But it really bothers me because going on these websites and looking at these magazines and the pictures of designers and collections used to be such a huge part of my daily routine (despite the fact that I've encountered so many people who complain about how vain and conceited fashion is. But that's a rant for another time because I don't feel like getting passionate about the f-bomb* in this post) At first I was afraid of the three possible causes that we're stooping me from actively engaging in the world of fashion like I used to.

a) I was becoming disenchanted with fashion at the age of 12. This literally frightens me because I associate it with a loss of my innocence which is something I'm already trying to deal with (I cried when I heard the Jonas brothers were breaking up and also Tavi's "forever" letter). I know that I'm still interested in fashion because I see people around me in school or on the sidewalk and think wow that's an awesome outfit, do I have anything like that? Or I listen to music and look at art and think, how can I express that through clothing?

b) fashion blogging is changing the way I think about fashion. For some reason, now whenever I look at a collection, I feel a weird obligation to have  incredibly complex thoughts about the clothing, even though sometimes I just want to think, wow that's cute. And maybe I want to put pictures of designs on my wall without constantly thinking about why the designer chose these colors and lines and what were they trying to convey with these clothes? This must sound ridiculous coming from someone who made the conscious decision to start a fashion blog, but they're just thoughts.

c) maybe school is physically sucking all of the ability to think creatively out of my life. Very, very plausible but mostly because whenever I have a problem i tend to blame it on school hahaha.

I don't know about all of this but I just really wanted my thoughts out there and I'll be back tomorrow with a report of my first time back on Vogue tomorrow.

things I have opinions about wow.

I have three days off of school this week for this non-holiday of Thanksgiving celebrating the massacre and betrayal of Native Americans that are usually horribly misrepresented in your typical First Thanksgiving reenactment. In reality, after the Wampanoags selflessly shared their crops with the less fortunate Pilgrims, the Pilgrims retaliated by driving the Native Americans (native, as in they were inhabiting and taking care of America long before and a lot better than the Pilgrims were) into reserves and bringing plagues and diseases that in the end led to a drastic decrease in the Native American population today. The Puritans even tried to convert the Native American “savages” to their Christian way of life. And then of course there’s the issue of the blatant cultural appropriation of Native American culture (remember when you saw someone dressed as an “Indian Princess” for Halloween.) Every time I read an article about this, (I’ve read about 7 over the weekend) I cry a little bit and I hate the concept of Thanksgiving a little more.

c. Thanksgiving is supposed to be a day to give thanks which is something that we actually do need, but it’s really not achieving its purpose today.

d. I REALLY hate eating turkey and you really can’t go through today in America without being bombarded by the smells and sights and cookbooks of people cooking turkey everywhere you go.

If you’re not from America, and you don’t really have any idea what I just ranted about or you want to hear informed opinions from people who know what they’re talking about/ are not 12 years old, read this.

On the other hand, I totally want to wish everyone who celebrates it, a Happy Hanukkah.

But yeah, no one really wants to hear me complain about how much I hate everything, so here are some of the things that I actually like. I guess you could say these are the things I’m thankful for . (see what I did there???????)

1. Nylon’s interview with Lana Del Rey

Lana is the cover star for Nylon’s annual America issue this year as well as one of my favorite singers, with her flowing, intense voice and lyrical ability, I can't get enough of her and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of her next album, as well as her new movie Tropico. The first time I heard her voice was in an H&M ad when I was about ten, but despite my age, I completely and utterly fell in love. It seems like Nylon managed to somehow ask all the questions about her life and her work without being overly prying and pushy.

2. Forty Fridas : Ellen Heck’s series of portraits depicting forty different girls and women dressed as the beautiful Frida Kahlo, a woman is personally a giant inspiration to me because of her “unconventional” beauty, strength, and talent. “each portrait focuses intimately on the task of pretending to be someone one isn't– and in so doing, revealing oneself all the more.” <3

3. Wrap Me Up The best writing blog I’ve ever read. The writer of the blog, Rosie, is funny, smart, and kind (She’s messaged me on various occasions to tell me how cool I am )Her interests include “sea creatures, high fashion, human anatomy, horror movies, making bows, Patrick Dempsey’s face, feminism, various bands, anything Winona Ryder touches, funny pictures of other people’s dogs, and, the fine art of netflixing while eating gummy worms.” I will totally understand if everyone immediately unfollows me and follows her because she is just that cool. {In fact, go follow her now. Go my minions, go!} And of course, she is an amazing writer. Two of my favorite pieces of hers are “Suburban Mom’s that aren’t my Mom are my Worst Nightmare: A Documentary in Four Parts” and “Second Sun”.

4. Sonic Youth. Wow I just started listening to them and to be quite frank, they are thebomb.com (note- I literally just spent 10 minutes on thebomb.com and I get the feeling that that says a lot about my personality and the way that my brain works) Um... I just spent about 20 minutes trying to figure out how to "embed" the playlist of my favorite Sonic Youth songs and I think now's a good time to mention that when it comes to some computer things, I am pretty much an old lady, as in I don't know what I'm doing but I can look adorable trying to figure it out.

5. My family (cue the awws). Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. How cute!
I actually have a heart {wow!} and I am sometimes in the mood for doing emotional things with other people. I recommend being around other people for extended periods of time, because contrary to popular belief, NOT everyone wants to steal your happiness. *shock horror*

Despite the fact that I just complained about how horrible thanksgiving is for about an hour, I still have some Thanksgiving pictures saved on my computer (Yeah, I’m not exactly sure what’s wrong with me) All of these photos are borrowed/stolen from Instagram. I repeat: none of these photos are mine, PLEASE, do not sue me.

Thanksgiving, Turkey, day, holiday, thanks, pilgrims, native americans

Only 10 days to go for the Crimes Against Hugh’s Manatees Kickstarter!

I'm extremely happy that I have the rest of the week off of school seeing that I can now catch up on my blogging, room decorating, journaling, and everyone's favorite... homework! (Please do not be fooled that was sarcasm of the highest level.)

Happy Thanksgivukkah you all/ Happy November 28!

Flying Sky High

What's up ladies and gents?

I know that I'm a horrible blogger and person and all of that because I haven't blogged in ages, but yeah, more about that later. Today I want to talk about one of my favorite childhood movies, which I just re-watched for the fourth or fifth time a while ago.

You guys, look at that really bad quality movie poster, doesn't it just look amazing. There are multiple reasons that I love love love Sky High

  • a lot of humor
  • a high school love story playing in the background
  • dramatic plot lines and action sequences
  • regular high school drama... but with superheroes and evil villains
  • an extraordinary amount of special effects
  • the internal conflicts
  • mad science
  • buildings that fall out of the sky
  • outcasts that end up saving the world
  • a plot twist (actually two)
  • a character whose mom is a superhero and dad is a supervillain and his name is Warren Peace
  • people that turn into babies
  • the general "Be yourself/sometimes the misfits are the cool kids" lesson that you see in most movies marketed to children
  • for me, a lot of nostalgia
  • an actual platonic relationship between two main characters without any intent to make anything romantic for any reason, which is something you usually don't see in movies, let alone Disney movies
  • This guy (for the full effect that has to be said in literally the sleaziest voice imaginable)

  • Magenta and her insanely cool style
Her name's Maj because she has magenta streaks in her hair and wears mainly purple clothing (as seen above)

QUOTEZ~

  • "If life were to suddenly get fair, it wouldn't be high school." Layla
  • "If you ever cross me again, I'll roast you alive." Warren
So how about you guys, have you ever seen Sky High and what are your favorite childhood movies? Let me know in the comments (I really love reading them!)

Goodbye.
