the mice have gnawed at it, and sharper teeth than teeth of mice have gnawed at me

i read great expectations in my english class, and was honestly not interested in pip at all.. but i did love reading about estella and miss havisham (the scene where they scream at each other and estella spouts those metaphors about knowing the darkness is just ughhhhhh). there was something immensely attractive about the entire setting of satis house, derelict surroundings of a woman who stopped time in mourning of the person she loved.

the book first describes her as dressed in rich "satins, and lace, and silks" that that were once white but have now become "faded and yellow," like the flowers in her hair and on her gaunt skin; the most fascinating character visually and in my opinion the most complex character in the entire book.(please email me if u want to talk about her!)

this is what the 2012 movie says she looks like.

commes des garcons (fw05)
patchwork-looking victorian lace and tulle shreds + the exaggerated paleness of the models' faces in this context add something ghastly. i really love the collars and the ruffles on the first jacket. they both have that timeworn yellow color.

miss havisham is also described in the book as having the look of a waxwork statue, and the silvery dustings in john galliano fw09 add to that image. the whole thing is really slinky and mysterious / rotting flowers are like miss havisham's jam; there's no train on the second dress, but it just feels like something that would be worn by someone absentmindedly dragging along random bits and pieces of rotting things with their dress.

these two are kind of more modern interpretations: i love the sleeves of the shirt for the velour magazine one on the left. the fabric in tao ss07 is really innocent and the bows and ruffles at the bottom add extravagance to the overall clean shape.

i feel like the last four (chanel s15 couture; cdg fw1990; cdg s12; junya watanabe fw2000)all have a really similar look in their drama. the pilled material that seems like it's stuffed onto the  first and second ones looks like really soft insulation. the headpieces of 1 and 3 just make me think of the word goop (and seem to relate to mis havisham's decaying pile of wedding cake). also, they're all really obstructive, so the wearer is keeping everyone who wants to get close to her far away which is literally her entire character.

--
i don't have a tattered wedding dress :((( so i kind of had to pull together my interpretation of what miss havisham would wear (the best photo is the last one): i DIYed the white button-up shirt (lol i found it in my fashion classroom and then i shortened and hemmed it, and drew on it), it kind of has a scalloped collar, and i thought that was really cute;  i just found the lace camisole, which was a softened layer; the shirt as skirt is my dad's to add layers; and i wore the skirt i made underneath because i thought the strings would make it look like more tattered. white sandal block heels for like, stomping on hearts n stuff. i also wore this silver necklace with a circular pendant that i've had since childhood.

there must be something in books, something we can’t imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house

in january, i finished up the last few pages of Fahrenheit 451 after leaving it alone for a week, and i have to say that it's honestly one of my favorites now. it's a thrilling, beautiful, and terrifying dystopian story about censorship and a future without books- where Guy Montag is a firefighter whose job is to burn books and the houses that contain them.

*this is a semi-spoiler:* the idea behind the book is scary because the government didn't really decide that knowledge would be a threat to their authoritarian rule, but because people just became less interested in knowledge as the world became more fast-paced, and they started to fear the intellectual as the unfamiliar, as the enemy- and then books became dangerous and had to be  destroyed. *spoiler over*.

the book is full of in-depth descriptions of everything, like every single word and name was chosen for some reason (usually as some allusion to fire): the name of the book is farenheit 451- the temperature at which paper burns; the symbols of the firemen are the pheonix and the salamander- both mythical animals that are meant to find their power in fire. ray bradbury's metaphors are beautiful and extensive, and vivid enough to make you feel like you have a real role in the story. one sentence can go on for lines-- and then hours after that as its burned (haha) into your memory.

i should also say that the way i look at ray bradbury's writing has partly been affected by something he wrote in the afterword of my version of f451. in it, he seems to blame minorities in our society for the censoring (and eventual destruction) of books. he mentions  receiving a note from a woman who suggested that he "rewrite the book inserting more women's characters and roles," and a note "complaining that the blacks in the books were 'Uncle Toms'," and another note "from a Southern white saying that I was prejudiced in favor of the blacks and the entire story should be dropped". one of my issues with this is that he seems to imply that the only plausible reaction is to destroy every work that doesn't fairly represent every member of society-- and not to examine or reflect upon how his prejudices or privileges may have found their way into his writing. he also seems to equate the complaints of every minority, not showing any understanding of the systems of oppression that affect some people and not others.

alexander wang's last resort collection reminds me of the book because some of the outfits seem to be directly inspired by firerfighter unifroms, but i felt like there was a connection with the pf2015 collection too. it's harsh and military(inspired) too, but i feel like there's a softer, more hopeful edge to this one.

"He saw himself in her eyes, suspended in two shining drops of bright water, himself dark and tiny, in fine detail, the lines about his mouth, everything there, as if her eyes were two miraculous bits of violet amber that might capture and hold him intact."

I really like the pieces of white, the layers, the details.

the two looks above are just so relaxed and well-made-- you can see the loungewear inspiration but its so clean. my mind is racing with outfits for the top of that pajama set.

i'm not really a fan of this shade of green, but it does help to create a sort of utilitarian aesthetic. but i really do love the dress: the straps, the shape.

i love monochrome looks, and this one looks really effortless and clean. the coat manages to cover the dress while adding to the whole image.

“He felt his body divide itself into a hotness and a coldness, a softness and a hardness, a trembling and a hot trembling, the two halves grinding one upon the other.”

this outfit is so expertly put together: the shape of the skirt, and the lines on the sweater falling in with the line on the boots. it's all really nice to look at.

fahrenheit 451 takes place against the backdrop of war that's plaguing the country, and it's a part of the plot, but it's hardly ever acknowledged until the ending. i keep talking about how delicate all of the references are in this collection, and the military inspiration is a clear example. you literally wouldn't notice the patterns on the pants if you didn't look closely enough.

"The jet bombers going over, going over, going over, one two, one two, one two, six of them, nine of them, twelve of them, one and one and one and another and another and another, did all the screaming for him."

this isn't really a good view of the dress (which is no doubt amazing), but you at least get to see the hem.

look at that blue sticking out ahh. it's so layered and heavy and beautiful.

The jackets in this collection are so strong that they could stand alone as exhibits-- they're simple and beautiful, and the bomber jacket is so cool.

the draping and material of these dresses are really elegant, but there's something structured about them that reminds me a lot of mildred, who i see as one of the most interesting characters because she's so empty, but has no real desire to live her life any other way.

"...in the millionth part of time left, she saw her own face reflected there, in a mirror instead of a crystal ball, and it was such a wildly empty face, all by itself in the room, touching nothing, starved and eating of itself, that at last she recognized it was her own...”

if any of you guys have read the book, i'd love to know your opinions on it, and any recommendations you have for similar books (in plot or writing style).

everywhere I fall, don't know name or location.

summar is ovarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and it was a little disappointing (I'm beginning to think it will never not be), but I:

cried like a baby at spirited away, kind of learned how to sew, did a lot of self-improvement,  caught up on Parks and Rec and Bob's Burgers, started watching Twin Peaks, went shopping at a thrift store near my house, went to an robotics and programming camp because nerd, got a letter telling me that I was accepted for a scholarship that I wrote like three essays and had about 5 panic attacks to get, got realllyyyy into the world cup, did some more art/writing, ignored crippling anxiety to submit some of said art/writing to zines, was happy and sad and enjoyed feeling feelings vividly, became more confident, volunteered at my library and met a buncha cool people, picked flowers, listened to a lot of podcasts, went to my first ever ONE DIRECTION concert with my friends which led to me figuring out that:

a. i like pop music because i like to danceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
b. being a snob about music is literally such a waste of valuable time that i could spend saving the world and being happy

and a few other things. also- I got back into reading books the way I read them when I was younger:

in space we're here a million miles away

The outfit that I wore to Chicago Zine Fest yesterday (!!!!!!!) was inspired by a weird amalgamation of all the things that have been running through my head in the past few days.

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson
I haven't seen this movie yet but I'm excitedly anticipating going to the theatre next weekend because it seems like a masterpiece. I've seen enough tumblr screencaps (rolls eyes) and read enough reviews to get that some of the commonly used colors are purple and pink. And also there's the insane attention to detail that Wes Anderson is known for.

The Grand Budapest Hotel - A Film by Wes Anderson - Coming 2014

wow doesn't that just look like a really intricate wedding cake that you would want to simultaneously smash your face into and admire for hours.

Amazingly this attention to detail travels beyond the movie screen onto AN ENTIRE WEBSITE EDUCATING YOU ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE COMPLETELY FICTIONAL REPUBLIC OF ZUBROWSKA THAT IS MADE LIKE AN ACTUAL INTERACTIVE COLLEGE COURSE you guys:

I strongly suggest you all check it out here, the sound effects and interactiveness are all incredibly fun in a Gone Home-esque way.

2. A really amazing bookstore I just discovered in my neighborhood which I will probably go back to every day for the rest of ever because it's just such a natural, ethereal, beautiful space and also BOOKS!

(please excuse the phone camera quality)

3. Ashish RTW Fall 2014

This collection and it's LED light up sneakers, glittering tulle, hyper-embellished blouses, frizzy hair, track pants and bras, glitterrrr, double distressed denim, pink frills, legwarmers and sportswear is basically everything tacky I've ever loved/hated to an extreme (and it's beautifully reminiscent of the 90s- a period I'm very fond of despite the fact that I spent all of it not being alive.)

4. The Moon Song by Karen O

The song is incredibly simple but does a really nice job of doing what music is supposed to do- which is transport you somewhere beautiful.

5. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.

I'm obsessed with space science and astrophysics and our insanely beautiful universe (if there's any science nerds out there reading this please send me an email so we can discuss the fact that Mars could have been supporting life three billion years ago and the black hole paradox and other kewl stuff.)- so obviously I'm very much in love with Cosmos.
a. It's hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who is now officially the babeliest person on the planet.

 via

b. I know this sounds like something incredibly fake that you would put on a scolarship application but learning new things is literally the best feeling in the world for me and every minute I spend watching Cosmos is a minute of me learning something I didn't know a minute ago which is pretty beautiful.
-

Basically sparkly things, etherealness, and stardust.

Zine fest was so much fun I can't even describe it. The zines were amazing, the people were so cool (there were a bunch of Rookies there), the vibes were incredible, the workshops were mindblowing and overall it was just FUN.
I'm not joking, you guys look at my stash!

Anywho, what did you guys do over the weekend?
