blue canary in the outlet by the light switch

I'm doing a lot of independent work this year and it's letting me grow and work at my own pace, which is nice because it gives me just enough time to think about everything. I still don't get home on time to take pictures of my outfits before the sun sets, so I've been postponing writing something until I had a chance to do that, but I think I'll just go ahead and do this anyway.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about 'nature theory'- like the idea that because you as a human are part of nature and the world as a whole, and "whether or not it is clear to you, the universe is unfolding as it should". I had a really nice September because everything felt connected. This isn't the best example but it's the only one I can remember: when I read ''for colored girls who have considered suicide" and there was an entire poem about Toussaint L'Overture in it and then I learned about him in History- or when I was was studying Carolignian England and then I found an essay about feminism in the Carolignian era while doing research for a biology project. Those sound like incredibly mundane events- but at the time it felt kind of electrical- like everything was coming together and I was putting together some sort of puzzle about my life.

I think nature theory has a lot to do with self love/acceptance and finding a balance between giving yourself power over your life and accepting the fact that you have no power to stop life from happening to you. The pictures do a better job at explaining it than I can- so...

hairy styles (get it?)

lately i've been thinking a lot about hair and how we perenially fuss and freak out over it (all those bad haircuts of middle school i'm looking at u; haha @ me saying "of middle school" as if i'm not *tragically* still in middle school and inherently in the midst of a bad haircut stage as i type this!) but it's just intersting how hair means so much to people in self-expression / self discovery, good hair days and their effect on both you and the whole world, how we give seemingly non-existent meaning to haircuts and of course: to shave the head or not to shave the head(little known fact: shakespeare was misquoted for hundreds of years on this), or maybe it was to dye an unnatural color or not to dye an unnatural color? to trim the bangs or not to trim the bangs???????

as a feminist i can't go over this without recognizing that i see hundreds of ads reminding women that (like everything else about them) "THEIR HAIR IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH AND WILL NEVER BE GOOD ENOUGH TO IMPRESS THAT GUY 1!1!1 unless of course they buy this beauty product now at a drugstore near you! (reclaimed sense of self-esteem not included)" and i'm not even gonna go deeper into the concept of telling women what to do with their hair because it's such a pervasive part of society, so i have to include that i'm not trying to glorify having hair that looks any particular way bc all hair is beautiful and having no hair is beautiful, and also you are beautiful n cool. <3<3<3

~interesting reads:~

on shaving it alllll off:

if hair is a war, will a buzzcut mean winning?

without a hair in the world

on the *symbolism* of haircuts:

a cut above the norm

what pastel hair means for women of color

and in light of the really gross anti-blackness surrounding people saying blue ivy's hair needs to b straightened:

my boss told me to straighten my afro --so i quit

--
anyway this is just some cool stuff that i've been looking at in terms of haircuts even though i think i mentioned it before but i reallyyyyyyyyyyyyyy (hi mom) want to shave my hair off, because i'm lo-maintenance (read: lazy) and i think it'd look cool.

i wish i had a boyfriend, i wish i had a pizza and a bottle of wine.

~
(back from my ramadan hiatus)
~

you might have noticed a trend in my outfit photos in which i crop out my feet in most of them because i'm running a serious defecit in the market of cool footwear (that was me trying to prove that economics lessons had a real impact on my life). but i put together a wishlist of shoes that make me feel v elijah wood as an animated penguin

black n white
black and white happy feet
(clockwise from top right)

1. CDG Play Converse: ohmygosh you guys there's a group of people at my school who wear these everyday (literally just to spite me) and they're so cool but definitely too simple to cost $100- maybe i'll get lucky and do a DIY or something

2. Topshop Arcade Cut-out Chunky Boots: yay for funky cutouts that magically turn you into an alexander wang model.

3. Topshop HI pool sliders

4. Juju Babe Hi Juju Jelly: i've been crushing on these shoes for such a long time without satisfaction that it's almost redundant to even talk about them seeing as I'm already at the point where I pretend to be "literally "the only person on the planet without them. but they're still as beautiful as ever- so i probably will never get over them.

5. MMM Holographic Oxfords: holographic shoes- this is the future

6. Nasty Gal Bruges Boot:  a more minimalistic version of those timberland work boots

7. Kenzo Brushed Leather Monk Strap Shoes : these are like capitalizing on the ugly shoe trend but bringing it to a whole new level by taking advantage of a shape that makes you feel like a very clunky and angry Takashi Nishiyama monster:

pretty in pink

pink happy feet

(clockwise from top right)

1. Topshop Rabbit Faux Fur Fluffy Sandals: this is even more glamorous than making it to the A-list on the Kim Kardashian game

2. Topshop Nowadays T-Bar Sandals: 50s  rachel antonoff/miu miu schoolgirl (also now i can make my cameo on mad men)

3. Retro Wave Scooter Banana Board: these aren't exactly shoes but they go on your feet so whatevur dude *skates off into the sunset*

4. Topshop MUD Festival Jelly Boots: the sock combinations alone are enough to make me cry

5. Nasty Gal Madison Sandals: i reallyyyy like this color

gold-ish brown

brown happy feet

(clockwise from top right)

1. Dr.Martens Connie Closed Toe Sandals: clunky and ugly but basically perfect

2. Yoox looks-like-mock CDG Toe Shoes: more CDG genius that is definitely going to have to be DIYed one day until i get a job paying me to eat vegan marshmallows out of a bag

3. AA Classic Clog: i really like these BECAUSE CLOGS but someone tell me where to get them other than AA because i'm still not sure what's going on there after they got rid of Dov Charney.

4. MMM Gray CD Mosaic Ankle Boots: i really have nothing (non-cliche) to say but i'm seriously in love

and now for a  funky bit of feet from tumblr and stuff (eta: i was just told to notify you that I don't have a fetish so...):

[He] 2s2 2p6 (tacky + smush)

one of my favorite seniors left school yesterday and i found myself unexpectedly grieving for both the time we spent together and the time we didn't (i know that sounds way dramatic but I am allowed to have drama thoughts because I AM A TEENAGER HEYYO**).

despite being sad, i was also incredibly happy for them because graduating is such a great thing (mostly because high school sux haha).

and then i also got this really weird feeling when i realized that there's 7 billion people and  I am one of them and they are one of them and there's a big chance that I'll see thousands more people in my life but never see them again. even though this kind of thinking usually leaves me pretty existentialist and sad, i am actually feeling super excited to be alive because:

wow there are so many people on this planet and we all have supercomputers in our bodies and we can feel emotions and see colors and there are billions of ways to be alive wow.

anyway, i decided to make a playlist of songs that kind of capture all of those loud beautiful emotions.

(if anyone wants to teach me how to embed 8tracks playlists, that would be cool- but for now i think you have to click through for the link)

the visual representation of all this is probably best described as neon because

1. neon glaring at you in the middle of the night in the city when everyone's supposed to be asleep
2. very tacky, very beautiful neon lights at those old arcades
